POV: Arriving in Rhodes with kids!
That’s it! You are in Rhodes! Your well-anticipated family trip has finally started, and you can’t wait to make new memories, but you have mixed feelings. How are your little ones going to adapt? Are they going to enjoy their time? And what if you don’t find activities to keep them busy and creative?
OK. First, don’t panic! Organising the perfect holiday can often be overwhelming, but nothing beats the palpable excitement and the fast heartbeat you experience upon arrival. Rhodes has something for everyone! Parks and green spaces? Check! Sparkling emerald waters? Check! Pebbled and sandy beaches? At your disposal! The variety of activities is so wide that even the most demanding of our little friends will be speechless.
What better way to explore the island, though, than follow the advice of the locals? The list of places, activities and excursions you’ll find below will make your kids jump for joy!
1. Rhodes Medieval City
Immerse into a journey through history, in the era of mighty knights and pirates, where your children will be city explorers. Yes! Children can enjoy a mind-blowing gamified experience that will train their body and mind. With an interactive smartphone scavenger hunt, they can travel back in time and solve location-based riddles to learn more about the city. Whoever collects the most gems wins special rewards in the network of local souvenir shops and museums.
All these, just 20 minutes away from Amada Colossos Resort and 10 minutes away from the centre by bus. Museums and other historical treasures will enrich the experience even more. Allow yourself about 4 hours to explore it all in depth or enjoy a stroll around cobbled streets.
Also, did you know that Rhodes Medieval City is a UNESCO-protected Heritage Site? Several medieval monuments along the way will fascinate you, while the stunning views overlooking the Aegean Sea will give you this sought-after sense of freedom.
2. Valley of Butterflies
Did you play with butterflies when you were young? Most children love the vivid colours and various shapes of butterflies, so what better chance to offer them a lifetime memory of watching thousands of butterflies fluttering around them? Just a little side note! We don’t want to scare them, do we? Butterflies perceive our voices, clapping and whistling as ultrasonic sounds, so to get the most out of the experience, we should try not to disturb their natural environment.
This unique and serene landscape with dense flora, paved paths, waterfalls and ponds is just a 30-minute trip from our resort and is the best place to relax and clear your mind listening to the sound of cicadas. The perfect place for nature lovers as well as a tranquil nature reserve to be proud of!
Extra tip: Toys, toys, toys! Do you know any child that can resist toys? We don’t! At the village of Archipoli, very close to the Valley, the
Toy Museum houses a vast collection of toys, all made in Greece from 1930-1990. Children can enjoy themselves playing with Lego and Playmobil, interactive toys and handicrafts in a designated area.
3. Agathi Beach
What is it that adults remember the most from their childhood? The summer holidays and endless sunny days at the beach, of course. Agathi may hinder your effort to persuade your children to leave the beach, but…there’s no other way! #Sorrynotsorry.
Located on the East side of the island near Lindos, 40 mins away from our resort, Agathi is a golden sandy beach boasting shallow emerald waters that your little swimmers will refuse to abandon. Let them build their sandcastles and play with water while you lie down on your sunbed relaxing your mind and spirits. This picturesque location featuring a mountainous background is indeed dreamy! Once you arrive on-site, hire your parasol and feel a real escape from everything. Oops! No snacks and drinks for kids? Don’t worry! We have your back. Three canteens are available nearby to get food and beverages.
Snorkeling in the outstanding underwater rock formations along the coastline is also an option for water sports lovers, or, if you are keen on tradition and history, there is a 700-800-year-old cave, just a short walk from the beach, where you can spot a little church built inside the rock. Beware though! To enter the premises, you need respectful attire.
4. Eleousa Village
For the quiet ones!...or maybe not? If holidays are your much-needed escape from daily struggles, then, at Eleousa Village you will find the tranquility and peacefulness you didn’t know existed. A village with a population of just over 250, immerses you in peacefulness and offers plenty of shade to help you cope with the summer heat. At the weekends, though, expect the rural sleepy village to be transformed into a lively hub of locals gathering from the city to try traditional dishes made with fresh local produce. This is your chance to familiarize your kids with different kinds of food.
FYI: Try the stuffed kolokithoanthi (zucchini flowers) with cheese, pitaroudia (savvy pancakes made with pumpkin, tomato and onion), or goat meat cooked in red sauce with beans.
Last but not least, now is the time for you and your children to meet one of the rarest fish species. Eleousa houses a great fish pond where freshwater
Gizani fish are kept, while among other highlights are the Italian Sanatorium, a 15th-century monastery and the Italian aqueduct. The whole scenery looks like an Italian movie! Don’t miss it!
5. The Bee Museum (a Greek exclusivity)
If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would only have four years of life left. No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man. - ALBERT EINSTEIN
No, kids! Bees are not as dangerous as you may think. The brilliant physicist just revealed all the truth about them! Bees are a miracle and keep this world alive through a series of natural processes. Since ancient times, their products have been famous for their healing properties and were the holy grail of the Olympian Gods.
Before your trip to Rhodes ends, don’t forget to visit the Bee Museum with your children so that they find out more about these fascinating creatures and their valuable products (honey, royal jelly, propolis, wax, etc.). Children will love to showcase their pastry skills and learn how to make traditional artisanal sweets like Rhodes favorite melekouni while using
interactive apps to earn awesome prizes.
Bonus Idea: Rhodes Aquarium
Watch out! You’re stepping on medusas, octopuses and sea stars! A whole new marine world lies beneath your feet! The Hydrobiological Station of
Rhodes Aquarium invites you to explore the sea life of the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean. Walk along the underwater cave and discover the 2000-year-old skeleton of the Monachus Monachus monk seal and other rare fish species. Have fun experiencing the touch pool and testing your knowledge of marine mammals at the kiosk.
Opening Hours: April 1st- October 31 st , 9:00-20:00, November 1st- March 31 st , 9:00-16:00.
